General, Laparoscopic & Minimally Invasive Surgery
GENERAL SURGERY • NORTHERN NEW JERSEY
Anthony L. Cuppari, MD, FACS provides experienced, personalized evaluation and surgical care for patients with hernias, including minimally invasive approaches when appropriate.
Understanding Hernias
A hernia occurs when tissue or an organ pushes through a weakened area of the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Some hernias cause only mild discomfort, while others may become increasingly painful or interfere with everyday activity. Dr. Cuppari evaluates each patient individually to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
Hernia Conditions
Hernias can occur in several areas of the abdominal wall. The appropriate treatment depends on the type of hernia, its size, symptoms and the individual patient.
An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin when tissue protrudes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. Symptoms may include a visible bulge, pressure or discomfort that becomes more noticeable with standing, lifting or activity. When surgical repair is appropriate, Dr. Cuppari discusses available treatment options and whether an open or minimally invasive approach may be considered.
An umbilical hernia develops near the belly button when tissue pushes through a weakened area around the navel. It may cause a noticeable bulge, pressure or discomfort. Dr. Cuppari evaluates the size, symptoms and individual circumstances of the hernia to determine whether surgical repair may be appropriate.
A ventral hernia occurs through a weakened area of the abdominal wall and may become more noticeable with standing, lifting or physical activity. Dr. Cuppari evaluates the location, size and symptoms of the hernia and discusses appropriate treatment and surgical repair options when indicated.
An incisional hernia can develop at or near the site of a previous abdominal surgical incision when tissue pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. It may cause a noticeable bulge, discomfort or pain, particularly with activity or lifting. Dr. Cuppari evaluates the size, location and symptoms of an incisional hernia to determine whether surgical repair is appropriate and which treatment approach may be considered.
Surgical Evaluation
A surgical consultation can help determine the type of hernia present, whether treatment is recommended and which surgical approach may be appropriate.
Not every patient or hernia is the same. Dr. Cuppari personally evaluates each patient and discusses the diagnosis, available treatment options and what to expect before deciding on a surgical plan.
Treatment Options
When surgery is appropriate, the operative approach is selected according to the type and location of the hernia, the patient's medical history and other individual considerations.
Minimally invasive techniques may be an option for selected patients. During consultation, Dr. Cuppari can explain whether an open or minimally invasive approach is appropriate for the individual patient.
